DONALDSON, IN – The Ancilla Charger Men's Soccer Team captured the NJCAA Region XII Championship on Sunday defeating Cincinnati State and Technical College, 4-1, and qualifying for the National Tournament for the first time in Ancilla school history.
Ancilla College was the host of the NJCAA Region XII Tournament over the weekend where Cuyahoga Community College, Schoolcraft College, Cincinnati State and Technical College, and Ancilla played for the Region XII Championship.
In the semi-final games, it would be #6 Ancilla College who captured the win over Cuyahoga Community College, 2-0, to go to play Cincinnati State in finals after their win over Schoolcraft College, 4-0.
Ancilla came out strong in the final match, striking first on goal from Kevin Mendoza assisted by Romario Piggott with 30 minutes to play in the first half. Seven minutes later, Cincinnati State shot to tie the game going into halftime on what Ancilla Head Coach Dave Jacobs would call "a defensive error."
"I told the guys what a good friend told me, that the finals are not just a game to play, they are to win," said Jacobs. "I think they responded well."
In the second half, the Chargers would need only four minutes to retake the lead. It was a great link up play down the right side by Lee Nicholson to find Romario Piggott who smashed it into the back of the net. Ancilla's defense was then put under constant pressure without breaking, and with seven minutes to play, Yaret Regino would find Brandon Duarte whose diving header put the Chargers up 3-1. Three minutes later, Duarte would find Piggott who got in behind the defense and slotted the ball into the side netting, icing the game.
"We played one of the best games we've played at the right time," remarked Jacobs.
"It was so exhilarating on Sunday to see 150 spectators run out on the field after we won the final game in the Region XII Tournament," said Ancilla Athletic Director Gene Reese. "It is especially satisfying to me to win the first Regional Championship in the history of Ancilla College Athletics. Being that we are ranked #5 in the country, we have as good a chance as anyone to win nationals."
Head Coach Dave Jacobs was named the NJCAA Region XII Coach of the Year. Josh Logan was named the Tournament MVP and Brandon Duarte, Kevin Mendoza, Romario Piggott, and Dylan Fillwock were name to the All-Tournament Team.
The Chargers will go on to play in the National Tournament in Tyler, TX on November 14-19, 2016.
