BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN – Heading into their final twelve games of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference season, the Ancilla College softball team (26-12, 11-11 MCCAA) started the day in fourth place, but dropped one spot in the standings after falling in a double header at Lake Michigan College by scores of 6-2 and 12-4.
"They just out executed and outplayed us," said Ancilla coach Scott Reese. "This is just the first set of ten games this week, though. We need to bounce back and be ready for the rest of the week."
Lake Michigan (11-19, 9-13 MCCAA) rose from seventh place into a tie for sixth with the sweep.
Ancilla led 2-0 going into the bottom of the fifth of the first game. The host Indians scored two in the fifth and four in the sixth to come away with the victory. Kaitlyn Dreibelbis and Gretchen Gieseking had two hits each for Ancilla, who was held to seven hits on the game. Gieseking had both of the Charger RBI on a two run home run in the third, her sixth of the season. The six home runs sets an Ancilla record for home runs in a season and ups her career total to eleven, also an Ancilla record.
The Chargers took an early 2-0 lead in game two, but an eight run third inning from Lake Michigan quashed Ancilla's hope for a split. Ancilla answered with two runs in the fourth, but it would be as close as they would get, as the Indians scored one in the fourth and three in the fifth to end the game by the eight run rule. Kayleigh Schroeder had three hits for Ancilla, while Dreibelbis and Courtney Clark added two each. Clark had the only two Charger RBI of the game, as well.
