DONALDSON, INDIANA – The Ancilla College softball team qualified for the NJCAA Region XII Softball Tournament for the first time since 2005 with a double header sweep of Grand Rapids Community College, winning 12-4 and 8-5.
"This is exciting," started Ancilla coach Scott Reese. "We got spoiled our first four years by qualifying three times. It's now been six seasons without a berth, and this team has done a fantastic job all season to stay focused on that goal."
The big inning was a key to the Charger success for the day.
Ancilla knocked out three different four run innings in game one with a number of outstanding performances. Cortney Ferrell was 3-3 with 2 RBI for the Chargers, while Kaitlyn Dreibelbis also added 2 RBI. Gretchen Gieseking was 3-4 with a RBI and Maura Hancock added a RBI with her 2-3 game. Rohni Beck, Kayla Dell, and Alysha Faler each added a RBI for Ancilla.
Courtney Clark picked up her school record thirteenth win of the season, allowing just three earned runs in her five inning complete game outing.
Game two went into the bottom of the fifth tied at one. Five straight one out hits by Ancilla, including a bases clearing double from Gieseking increased the Charger lead to 6-1. Grand Rapids answered with one in the top of the sixth, while Ancilla came back with two more in the bottom of the frame to increase the lead to 8-2, which came in handy since the visiting Raiders put up three runs in the seventh to make the final 8-5.
Gieseking came up with another big performance, finishing 2-3 with 4 RBI. Dreibelbis and Faler had multiple hit performances in the second game, coming away with 3-4 and 2-3 games respectively.
