LOGAN (OH) - With the Winter weather the way it is, it can be difficult to find early season baseball games, but the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team traveled to Southeast Ohio over the weekend to play a pair of double-headers against Hocking College at Logan High School. Friday afternoon, the Hawks "haunted" the Chargers on the infamous Friday the 13th, as they came from behind twice with a big-inning rally late. Below is a quick glimpse into each of Friday's games, along with some Charger highlights.
2/13 GAME-1 (L 12-2): Through 3 1/2 innings, the score was 1-1 and the Chargers had started to find their bats with 7 hits already. Additionally, Sophomore starter Evan Lanphier was equally good, striking out 4 and allowing just 2 hits and a run through 3 innings of work. But to begin the bottom of the 4th, the Hawks drew 2 walks off Lanphier and he left the game. Following those two walks came the combination of 2 more walks, 3 singles, a double, and a hit batsman (not necessarily in that order), and the scored ballooned to 8-1 in favor of Hocking.
The Chargers would get a run back in the top of the 5th, making it 8-2, but then Hocking add 2 in the bottom of the 5th and 2 in the bottom of the 6th to win a shortened 6-inning game, 12-2. Lanphier (0-2) unfortunately took the loss, despite his strong start. All 10 of the Charger hits on the day were singles, with Sophomore Logan Clark and Freshmen Cade Quick & Devon Ortiz all reaching safely twice on base-knocks.
2/13 GAME-2 (L 4-3): Saturday's second game saw the Chargers lead for nearly the entire contest, then Hocking made a rally in the bottom of the 7th to walk the game off, 4-3. Marian Ancilla picked up their first run in the top of the 3rd inning, when Sophomore Logan Clark blasted a 2-out, bases empty triple. Two pitches later, Sophomore Kaleb Short singled to left field, scoring Clark, and putting the Chargers up, 1-0.
Hocking would tally their first mark in the bottom of the 4th, as they singled, stole second base, then drove that runner in on their own single to left field. At 1-1 in the top of the 5th inning, it was Short's turn to respond, as he launched a 2-out, bases empty double to left field. On the very next pitch, Freshman Cade Quick followed with his own double to right field, and it was 2-1 Chargers.
The 7th inning then decided to steal the show with all the drama. At the top of the inning, Clark continued his strong day, blasting a 2-out, solo home run out to right field, extending the Charger lead to 3-1. But Hocking wasn't done. In the bottom of the 7th, their leadoff batter was plunked with a pitch, then their second player up crushed a 2-run home run ball out to right field, and suddenly the score was knotted at 3-3. Following a pitching change, the next Hawks batter walked, stole second base, then MUAC got their first out on a line drive to the second baseman. The Chargers then opted to intentionally walk the following Hawk to allow a force out at any of the three bases, but the Hawks' final batter had different plans. After watching 2 strikes, then fouling off 3 more pitches to stay alive, he hit a line drive to right field, scoring the runner from 2nd base, and it was all over, 4-3 Hocking.
Freshman starting pitcher Jaylan Yates was outstanding for much of this game, pitching 6+ innings, striking out 11 batters, and only allowing 6 hits and a walk in total. Freshman pitcher Johnnomar Alsina (0-2) was credited with the loss in relief. Logan Clark finished the second game 2-for-4 with a triple and a home run, plus an RBI and 2 runs scored.
