AUBURNDALE (FL) - Following Sunday's opening double-header, the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team continued its annual Florida Spring Break trip with a single game Tuesday afternoon and a single game Wednesday afternoon. After dropping Tuesday's contest to Ridgewater College (MN), 8-1, the Chargers responded with a 16-2 win over Lake Region State College (ND) Wednesday. Below is a look at highlights from each of the two games.
3/3 GAME (L 8-1): Ridgewater got started early, scoring 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning on a single, a double, and another single to lead 2-0 and never trail. They picked up another run in the top of the 5th inning and 5 more in the top of the 6th, for their 8 total runs.
The highlight for Marian Ancilla came in the bottom of the 6th inning, already trailing 8-0. Freshman pinch hitter Cayden Nolan drew a 1-out walk, then Freshman Cade Quick hit a fly ball single to center field. Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron then stepped to the plate and drove a line drive to left field, scoring Nolan.
Sophomore starting pitcher Evan Lanphier (0-3) took the loss, but he put together another solid performance, allowing just 3 earned runs through 5+ innings. Freshman reliever Kaydric Tyson finished the game with 2 strong innings on the mound, allowing just 1 base-runner, a hit batsman, and striking out 2.
3/4 GAME (W 16-2): There were plenty of highlights in this one, as the bats came alive for the Chargers, but Sophomore Kaleb Short (1-0) was equally impressive on the bump. Short managed 5 scoreless innings, allowing just a walk and a hit batsman (0 hits), and he struck out 10 batters. Sophomore Dylan Ford allowed 2 earned runs in his 2 innings of work, but he only allowed 1 hit and struck out 4.
As for the bats, Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron smashed the biggest bomb of the day...a 6th inning GRAND SLAM, helping the Chargers extend their lead to 12-0 at the time. On the day, Negron was 3-for-5 with 2 singles, the home run, 4 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. The Chargers scored 4 in the 1st, 1 in the 2nd, 2 in the 3rd, and 1 in the 4th to begin the game with an 8-0 lead. They then scored another 8 runs in the top of the 6th to complete their scoring, while LRSC picked up their 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning for the 16-2 final score.
Sophomore Aiden Marcus was 2-for-3 with a triple, 2 RBIs, and 3 runs scored. Sophomore Evan Lanphier was 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Freshman Kelton Weaver (2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base) and Sophomore Jaxson Hixson (2-for-3 with 2 runs scored) also had multiple hits. Sophomore Logan Clark scored a pair of runs, Freshman Devon Ortiz had a single, 2 RBIs, and a run scored, Freshman Cade Quick scored a run, and Redshirt Freshman Javier Higham had a double, an RBI, a run scored, plus a stolen base.
The Chargers get Thursday off for some relaxation, before returning to the field for a Friday (3/6) double-header against Bryant & Stratton College (WI). Games should start around 9:30a and 12:00p. Good luck, Charger Baseball!!
