The Marian Ancilla Men's Basketball team is off to an impressive start, and if their 3-0 record doesn't do enough for you, maybe the fact that all three games have been on the road a few hours away stands out. Last night, the Chargers traveled to Danville, Illinois, to take on the Jaguars of Danville Area Community College. The Chargers were able to use a strong second half to separate from the Jaguars, winning 86-68.
Marian Ancilla entered the locker room at halftime up just 36-33, but they spent the second half stringing together possessions of scores and stops, helping them to build their lead. With their 86 points last night, the Chargers are now averaging a whopping 91.3 points per game through three games thus far.
Sophomore forward Jayden Sanders was big in the frontcourt, scoring 19 points, including burying 4 of 9 shots from downtown, plus he collected 10 rebounds for the double-double. Sanders also dished out 3 assists in the victory. Freshman guard Jordan Woods continued his hot start to the season, scoring 15 points and pulling in 10 rebounds for his own double-double. Freshman guard Matt King (15 points) and Sophomore wing Dante Porch (15 points) joined them in double figures. The Jaguars were led by Abdul Mitchell's 11 points.
Charger Head Coach Aaron Butcher seemed thrilled with the result but understands there is much more to do this season, "Danville is a very well-coached, talented team. To go into their place and get this win was big for our guys. We reached halftime up three [points] and had just played okay to that point, but I thought in the second half we really played well and were able to combine stops with scores at the other end to extend our lead a little." He continued, "it was another balanced effort as we had four guys score in double figures, and for the second straight game, we had multiple guys record double-doubles. We are doing a lot of good things but still have a lot of potential for growth, and we look forward to continuing to improve each time out."
The Men's Basketball team has a short turnaround, as they partake in another road trip into Ohio Saturday to take on Edison State Community College in a 1:00 p.m. afternoon start. Please come out and support the Chargers, if you are able!
