5/5/26 - 7:30 a.m.

BATTLE CREEK (MI) - Following up a strong regular season, the Marian University Ancilla Men's Golf team headed to Battle Creek, Michigan, to participate in the NJCAA Region 12 National Qualifier at Bedford Valley Golf Course, hosted by St. Clair County Community College. The top two teams from this event qualifier for the NJCAA Division II National Championships at Swan Lake Resort May 19-22. Last season, the Chargers were just a couple of strokes from qualifying as a team, so this year they are on a mission.

The Regional Qualifier consists of three total rounds, with two rounds being played on Monday (5/4/26), and the final round being played today (5/5/26). Throughout the day today, weather permitting, we will be following along with the action, updating this article repeatedly with new highlights every 45 to 60 minutes or so. It appears as though it could rain just before the third round, then again for about an hour in the middle of action today.

Yesterday was an adventure for the Chargers, however, as they started off quite slow, then kicked it into gear during the second round, making major waves and putting themselves one step closer to a Regional Title and a qualifying bid to the National Championships.

In the opening round that began at 9:00a, the Chargers had to overcome a sluggish start to the day, but toward the end of the first round, things began picking up. They finished round-1 with a 316 as a team, which had them in 3rd Place, but they were 17 strokes behind 1st Place Mott Community College.

During the second round, however, the Chargers started strong, finished strong, and made everyone else in the field chase them. As a team, they scored a 294, which was only the second round under 300 on the day (Mott posted a 299 during first round action). Not only that, but Marian Ancilla took the lead and opened up a 7-shot advantage on now second place Mott. Being 19 strokes better than everyone else in the second round, put them in a great position to begin Tuesday's action.

As for the individual competition, Sophomore Hunter Zdyb has been lights-out all Spring, and Monday was no different. In the first round, he shot a 71 (-1), good enough to be in a tie for 2nd Place, just one stroke behind the leader. He then took charge in the second round, especially on the front-9, as he shot a 4-under 68 in total, for a 2-round score of 139 (-5). No other golfer is under par at this point, with the golfer currently in 2nd Place sitting at +3 heading into today.

Freshman Juan Pablo Benavente shot a tough 77 (+5) through 18 holes, but he bounced back with a nice 1-over (73) second round, and he sits in solo 5th Place. Freshman Jace Lugar also made nice strides from round-1 to round-2. He shot a +12 (84) in the opening round, but he fought back with a 76 (+4) in the second round.

Freshman Jeffery Cook and Sophomore James Sanders are the other Charger golfers in action. Cook went 87 + 77, also showing marked improvement from round to round. Sanders was consistent, shooting an 84 in each of Monday's rounds.

Tuesday's action is set to start at 9:00a. Again, we will be updating this article throughout the third round today, so please continue to check in. Good luck Chargers!!
