Chargers Pick Up Win on Final Day

PLYMOUTH (IN) - Saturday was a big day for the Marian University Ancilla Softball team. It was the final time this specific team would take the field together, it was Sophomore Day honoring our Sophomores who will be moving on, and it saw the Chargers victorious for the 6th time this year, which is the most since the 2016-2017 season. All-in-all, the Chargers split with Glen Oaks Community College, winning the first game 3-1 but falling 6-2 in the second.

GAME-1 (W 3-1): Game-1 was pretty stagnant through 4 1/2 innings, then the Chargers went on a bit of a run, scoring all 3 of their runs in the bottom of the 5th inning. Sophomore Kierstin Schjoll led off the inning with a single. Sophomore Cayla Craft hit into a fielder's choice, with Schjoll out at second base and Craft replacing her on first base. Freshman Abby Harmon then hit into a fielder's choice as well, and now she was safe at first but Craft ended up out as second.

Sophomore Lilliana McMillen then hit a 2-out double, moving Harmon over to third base. Sophomore Morgan Fogle then hit her own double, scoring Harmon and Freshman Christina Grabowski, who was a courtesy runner for McMillen, and it was 2-0 Chargers. The very next batter, Sophomore Cayla Beasley, followed with a single, scoring Fogle, and Marian Ancilla was up 3-0.

The Chargers would have to evade one final attempt by the Vikings, as Glen Oaks utilized an error by the Chargers to score in the top of the 7th inning, but that was all they would get, and it was a 3-1 final. Sophomore Kim Cummings pitched one final gem in a Charger uniform, completing all 7 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 run, unearned, while striking out 6 Vikings.

GAME-2 (L 6-2): Game-2 saw the Chargers pick up 9 hits and score a couple of runs, but Glen Oaks put together a 5-run 3rd inning, and that was enough to secure the victory, 6-2. For Marian Ancilla, Sophomore Morgan Fogle drove in a run on 2 hits, plus she laid down a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Christina Grabowski hit a pair of singles and scored a run, and Freshman Mickayla Naanos hit 2 singles. Naanos and Sophomore Kim Cummings combined for 4 2/3 innings of solid relief work, allowing just one run.

The Charger Softball team finishes the season 6-26 overall and 6-24 in the MCCAA Western Conference...both are the most wins of their type in nearly 10 years. The Chargers will be back at it in the Fall, looking to build even more success, once school returns.
