The Marian University Ancilla Volleyball team continued its solid start to the season, defeating the Grace College JV team Thursday night, 3-sets-to-1. The Chargers utilized a come-from-behind mentality early, timely hitting throughout, and strong defense at the net to defeat the Lancers.
MUAC had to battle back in the first set after trailing by as many as 5 points, but they were able to extend the set a little, winning 26-24. Freshmen Alex Sutherlin and Maliya Freeman-Gates each had 5 kills in the set, Freshman Miranda Woodard added another pair of kills plus a solo block, Freshman Anna Christopher had 10 assists, and Freshman Adalynn Garza struck 2 service aces during a late rally for the Chargers.
During a sloppier second set, the Chargers struggled through a myriad of errors, whether it was in service (2), serve/receive (6), on attack (4), or simple ball handling (1). That helped the Lancers knot the match at a set apiece with a 25-22 set win.
But the Chargers rallied in Set #3, as Sutherlin posted another 4 kills, Christopher added 7 assists to her total, and Garza collected 2 more service aces in a 25-18 third set win for Marian Ancilla.
Set #4 saw much of the same, as the navy & gold took control in the middle portion of the set and finished off the Lancers, 25-19, in the final stanza. Woodard stood out in the fourth set with 3 kills and 4 total blocks at the net. Freeman-Gates added 4 kills, while Christopher handed out 9 more assists.
The Chargers are now 6-4 on the season, tying for the most wins in a season over the last 6 years. They have the weekend off before beginning their conference season next Tuesday, September 16th, when they host a talented Roadrunner team from Southwestern Michigan College. Please come out and support the ladies, if you are able!!
