Last night, the Marian University Ancilla Volleyball team stacked together different types of comebacks to secure their first MCCAA victory of the season, 3-1, over Glen Oaks Community College. The Chargers are now 8-5 on the season, and they have equaled the total number of on-court wins from the past five seasons combined (the Chargers were credited with a forfeit win after the season in 2024). Below is a look at how the night unfolded.
Set-1 (L 25-21): Marian Ancilla began the evening a bit on the sloppy side, as they committed 15 unforced errors, leading to 60% of the Vikings' points. Freshmen Adalynn Garza and Miranda Woodard each tallied 3 kills in the opening set, while Freshman Anna Christopher was responsible for 8 assists.
Set-2 (W 25-23): The Chargers came out a little slowly once again, and following a 4-1 start that found them down, they rallied and won a tight battle, 25-23. Christopher was accurate, assisting on 15 scores, while Freshman Alex Sutherlin had 6 kills in the set, plus Woodard and Freshman Maliya Freeman-Gates each came up with 4 kills in the second period.
Set-3 (W 25-19): In the middle of Set #3, Marian Ancilla seemed to separate a bit, leading by as many as 7 points. Glen Oaks fought back and cut it to 3 at 20-17, but the Chargers stretched it back out to win, 25-19. MUAC also played as "clean" as they did all night, with just 6 unforced errors in the set. Sutherlin again led with 4 kills, while Sophomore Kaitlynn Kelderhouse had 7 digs.
Set-4 (W 25-23): The final period of the match was thrilling down the stretch. With their backs against the wall, down 2-sets-to-1, the Vikings fought hard to build an 18-10 lead. Following a timeout, the Chargers responded, stacking runs together to initially trim it to 22-18. Trailing 23-21, Sophomore Emma LaPato subbed in and served out the match, including a service ace during the run. With that final push, the Chargers outscored Glen Oaks 7-1, completing the comeback, and winning the match, 3-1.
Sutherlin led the Chargers with 15 kills, while Garza was also in double-figures with 10. Christopher led the team with 36 assists, Kelderhouse led with 28 digs, and Freeman-Gates topped Marian Ancilla with 6 total blocks. Sophomore Kylie Lane teamed with LaPato to commit just one error apiece on 30 total serve/receive attempts.
The Volleyball team is back in action tomorrow when they head to Benton Harbor to take on Lake Michigan College. It's another MCCAA showdown for the Chargers. Please come out and support the ladies, if you are able!!
