It was a roller-coaster night for the Charger Volleyball team Thursday night, as they took on Lake Michigan College in Benton Harber during an intense MCCAA conference matchup. As opposed to Tuesday night, this time the Chargers found themselves on the short end of a comeback, falling 3-2.
Marian Ancilla came out aggressive early in the match, leading the first set by as many as 6 points. But the Red Hawks fought hard, forcing the Chargers to squeak out a 25-23 first set decision.
In the second set, the Red Hawks controlled it for nearly its entirety, as they evened the match at a set apiece, following the 25-17 period win.
During the third set, however, the Chargers looked as strong as they have all year, rattling off point after point to secure a 2-to-1 set lead behind a 25-8 third set.
However, once again Lake Michigan would respond in the fourth set, as they took the fourth stanza by a 25-19 score, evening the match at 2 sets apiece.
In the fifth and final set, the teams played to 15 points (win by 2). As a tradition, the teams switch ends of the floor after one team gets to 8 points. In this case, Lake Michigan led 8-5 at the switch, and then led 13-10 with just 2 points needed for the match. But Marian Ancilla played a strong fifth set, evening the set at 14-14. The Red Hawks then responded with two of their best scores of the night in spots the Chargers just couldn't cover, winning the set (16-14) and the match (3-2) for a big MCCAA victory.
On the night, the Chargers got 17 kills from Freshman Adalynn Garza, 21 digs by Sophomore Kaitlynn Kelderhouse, 46 assists out of Freshman Anna Christopher, and 3 blocks apiece from Freshmen middles Miranda Woodard and Maliya Freeman-Gates.
The Volleyball team is now 8-6 on the season, 1-2 in the MCCAA, and they next play on Tuesday (9/30) when they travel to Kalamazoo Valley for a 6:30p first serve. Please come out and support the ladies, if you are able!!
